Azerbaijan is a culturally rich country located at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. Known for its significant Shia Muslim population, Azerbaijan has contributed greatly to Islamic civilization, producing many scholars and scientists throughout history. The nation spans an area of approximately 86,600 square kilometers.
Strategically positioned along the western shore of the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan shares borders with Russia to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia to the west, and Iran to the south.
As of the year 2000, Azerbaijan had a population of about 8.1 million. However, the population has since grown significantly and is currently estimated at over 15 million people.
The Republic of Azerbaijan gained its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Baku, the capital and largest city, is the political, cultural, and economic center of the country. Azerbaijani is the official language, and the majority of the population adheres to Shia beliefs.
The country operates under a centralized government structure with a semi-presidential political system. Historically known as Aran, Azerbaijan is now divided into 59 districts, 11 major cities, and one autonomous republic.
